Ariadne auf Naxos - R. Strauss
During the preparations for the première of an opera, there is a scandal when the client asks the composer to stage the work simultaneously with the performance of a troupe of entertainers. Led by Zerbinetta, the latter endeavour to comfort the prima donna, who has been abandoned by her lover. But Ariadne has buried herself in her grief, and alternates between reminiscing about her happy past and fantasising about death. Only the arrival of a man whose voice strikes her right in the heart wakes her from her torpor.

Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg - Wagner
As early as 1845, Richard Wagner was preoccupied with the "Meistersinger" material, which he considered suitable for a kind of "satyr play" for his "Tannhäuser": the singing contest of the knights on the Wartburg is contrasted with the singing competition of the masters on the festival meadow in Nuremberg, which is won by Walther von Stolzing. However, this impetuous innovator first has to be instructed by Hans Sachs to control his inspiration, which is engendered by immediate emotions and by exploring form, namely the strict rules of the Meistersinger.

Ein Sommernachtstraum - Mendelssohn-Bartholdy/Reich/Glass
Heinz Spoerli has interpreted one of the most famous plays in world literature, William Shakespeare's "Midsummer Night's Dream", as a neoclassical narrative ballet. Stage craftsmen and ballet dancers find themselves in a shared dream of the theatre. A fantastical, fairy-tale evening on the trials and tribulations of love, mistaken identities, transformations and entanglements, on the "anarchy of stupidity" and "the desire to play in the world of the fairies" (Heinz Spoerli).

Otello ossia il Moro di Venezia - Rossini
Gioachino Rossini's "Otello", which the composer presented at the Teatro del Fondo in Naples in 1816, is only loosely based on the famous Shakespearean tragedy. Francesco Berio's libretto is primarily indebted to a drama that had been premièred in Naples in 1813: "Otello" by Baron Carlo Cosenza.

Turandot - Puccini
Turandot, a cruel princess, has every man beheaded who asks for her hand - unless he manages to solve three riddles. One day a prince arrives, and not only answers the three questions, but also gives her a riddle to solve: Turandot must find out his name by sunrise.
